Course Aims

An exciting 5-day Advanced Bobath course, developing the course participant’s knowledge and skills in the rehabilitation of the postural control system, with a focus on the recovery of locomotion and aspects of upper limb function, in the neurological patient.

Bringing theory into practice, we will explore the systems model of neurophysiological control, and how our understanding of this enhances our clinical reasoning, using the Model of Bobath Clinical Practice.

We will apply this to patient demonstrations, assessing, analysing and developing the patient’s postural control and recovery of movement to improve the function of locomotion, and the upper limb and hand.

Practical hands-on sessions will establish advanced clinical skills in the course participant and allow reflective practice for their on-going continuous professional development.

Learning Objectives:

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

• Apply advanced clinical reasoning in the assessment and treatment of neurological patients using the Bobath Clinical Practice Model
• Understand how neurophysiological changes influence movement and function
• Analyse the relationship between posture, locomotion, and upper limb activity
• Identify key biomechanical and neurophysiological components of movement and their impact on function
• Improve understanding of sensory input, body schema, stability, and mobility in movement control
• Develop greater confidence in facilitation techniques and treatment strategies
• Use evidence-based movement analysis to guide clinical interventions

Senior Bobath Tutor

Mary Elizabeth Lynch-Ellerington, GradDipPhysio, F.C.S.P., is one of the world’s most respected and influential leaders in neurological rehabilitation and Bobath education, with over 50 years of clinical practice, academic contribution, and international teaching excellence.

She holds a Graduate Diploma in Physiotherapy (GradDipPhysio) from The Bradford School of Physiotherapy, where she was awarded the Jean Brock Award for Outstanding Student in recognition of exceptional academic and clinical achievement. She is a Fellow of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (F.C.S.P.), one of the highest professional honours within the physiotherapy profession, awarded for outstanding and sustained contribution to neurological physiotherapy and professional leadership.

Mary formally qualified as a Bobath Tutor in 1981 and as a Senior Bobath Tutor in 1984, and has since devoted her career to the clinical development, teaching, and international advancement of the Bobath Concept. Since 1987, she has lectured extensively by invitation across the United Kingdom, Europe, Asia, Australia, and North America, delivering introductory, basic, and advanced Bobath courses, and leading instructor and tutor training programmes in countries including the UK, Canada, Australia, Japan, South Korea, Norway, and Belgium.

She previously worked at the Bobath Centre in London as a Senior Bobath Tutor and Senior Therapist, where she trained and worked directly with Dr Karel and Mrs Berta Bobath, the founders of the Bobath Concept. This places her within the original educational lineage of Bobath practice and philosophy.

In addition to her extensive teaching career, Mary has held numerous senior leadership and academic roles, including Clinical Leader of the British Bobath Tutors Association (BBTA), Honorary Life Member of the International Bobath Instructors Training Association (IBITA).  She has served on multiple international education, qualification, and governance panels and has been a key contributor to the ongoing theoretical and clinical framework of the Bobath Concept.

Mary is a widely published author and international keynote speaker, including co-author of the seminal textbook The Bobath Concept: Theory and Clinical Practice in Neurological Rehabilitation. Her teaching is internationally recognised for its depth, clarity, scientific rigour, and strong clinical relevance, and she is highly regarded for her ability to integrate neuroscience, motor control, and practical therapeutic application.

Mary Elizabeth Lynch-Ellerington represents the highest standard of excellence in Bobath education and neurorehabilitation worldwide, combining clinical mastery, academic leadership, and a lifelong commitment to advancing best practice in neurological care.
